Summer Solstice

In the northern hemisphere, the longest day of the year (near June 22) when the Sun (http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/astronomy/Sun.html) is farthest north. In the southern hemisphere, winter (http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/astronomy/WinterSolstice.html) and summer solstices (http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/astronomy/Solstice.html) are exchanged. The summer solstice marks the first day of the season (http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/astronomy/Season.html) of summer (http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/astronomy/Summer.html). The declination (http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/astronomy/Declination.html) of the Sun (http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/astronomy/Sun.html) on the (northern) summer solstice is known as the tropic of cancer (http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/astronomy/TropicofCancer.html) (23° 27').
