April 13, 2029 could be they day you die, Marry X-mas
Quote:
Numerous readers wrote in with bits about a potential asteroid collision: "The recently discovered asteroid 2004 MN4 is currently listed as having a 1/233 chance of hitting the Earth. It is 420 m across and if it strikes the Earth it will release an energy of 1,900 Megatons of TNT (the largest nuclear weapon ever detonated, Tsar Bomba had a yield of only 50 Megatons). It is also the only asteroid that currently has a Torino scale value of 2." So, in summary, there's a 1-in-233 chance of the worst disaster in recorded history happening on April 13, 2029, and a 232-in-233 chance of nothing happening. Have a nice day

Only 420 m across? What will be left of it after the burn from the atmosphere? If it even does get here.

We'd have better luck either moving the astroid or abandoning Earth.
If we route emergency power through the deflector dish, we should be able to create a warp bubble that would temporaril lower the gravitaional constant around the asteroid. That way we could use the ships tractor beam to slightly alter the asteroids trajectory. It won't be much, but I think it will be enough.

tbh we should have spaceships by now, or at least be looking into building them rather than looking to build the world's longest bridges or whatever...

Re: April 13, 2029 could be they day you die, Marry X-mas
Meh, the Mayan society said that the end of our time will come in 2012. They're right too.
In 2029 the only thing left will be algae and stoats - and who cares about stoats.

Re: April 13, 2029 could be they day you die, Marry X-mas
I've heard that about the Mayans, but isn't the year different that our year, so its debatable when their year started and ours.

Re: April 13, 2029 could be they day you die, Marry X-mas
Don't Jehova's witnesses have a date set around that time too?
Also, this was fun-> http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/impacteffects/

Well, it's all to do with their star charts and the procession of the equinoxes. It's been established that the doomsday that they referred to was December the 21st 2012.
Also for every near earth asteroid that has been discovered, there are at least 20 similar undiscovered asteroids cruising around our solar system. I'd say that there is a good chance of an undiscovered one posing more of a threat than the one you outlined.
Doom-mongering rawks :01:

Never been there, or anywhere connected to that culture, but from the pics and things I've read it would be an awesome place to visit. Your friend is a lucky bloke.
