I want to make a sample clip from an avi I've downloaded. Any software I can use
that doesn't involve me burning to dvd and ripping from by dvd burner/rom drive?

virtual dub? Its less hassle to install then the other two.

That's what I've used and it has worked well. Small program for simple stuff like the original poster seems to need.
