Um... well, to backup DVDs? Having to choose between the two, I'd have to say... both.

I use DVD Shrink. Seems like a good 'un - not too complicated and is pretty stable.

DVD Decrypter is best IMO
I use SmartRipper for ripping and VirtualDubMod for converting to AVI... So, neither. :P
wish i could use smartripper but it uses DeCSS and illegal in the states =\ lol
