is it possible?
is there some kinda software that will tell my pc to dial straight to my backup pc?
without any extra hardware, or going through the phone line?
i got two pc's sitting maybe 5 ft from each other,
and would like to see if i can send files through the v90 modems
(i thought i had a serial cable laying around, but dont)
i got transfers going atm so i cant disconnect my ethernet from the cable modem
and it would be a pain to have to switch the cable every time i want to transfer a file....
the thing is, i got a driver file that my backup needs,
and its 9.x megs (too big for a floppy, and too small for even a pocket cd-r)
so for smaller files a modem to moden connection would do just fine for me
or is that not possible?
TIA B)

;) you should be able to just network them.
-
u should network them together using a cat 5 cross over cable.. or go to start/systems and on systems properties goto remote and highlight REMOTE DESKTOP and it says allow user to connect remotely to this computer. and then select remote users. and then add the pc name of the computer u want to remotly connect to ie ur other pc it the other room (i think.... givr it a try) ;)
-
you can also connect the 2 comps together with either the serial or parellel ports, and use software to connect the 2 together
-
buy a router.
use shared folders in windows network.
i use firewire to transfer files between computers.
400 Mbps :)

as you dont want to get any hardware, i'm not sure if its possible. you can try to use direct cable connect feature of windows START > ALL PROGRAM > ACCESSORIES > COMMUNICATIONS > NEW CONECTION WIZARD > SET UP AN ADVANCED CONNECTION > CONNECT DIRECTLT TO ANOTHER COMPUTER. Choose which you want to host (transfer files from) and which to guest. Give a name and then choose which connection method you want.
You may not be offered modem, if not you will need some other connection cable and make a conection that way.

well, i was reading some more last night, and it looks like it MAY be possible,
with the right software (some kinda terminal emulator BS or somethin)
but looks like too much trouble
looks like i will just end up getting me a serial cable or somethin
dont know what the transfer rates on em are, but it doesnt really matter
a 9 pin serial cable is only a couple of bucks,
which is i am sure cheaper than a crossover cable
and i have the option to network em with the serial port,
but with all my screwin around with it last night,
i didnt see any option to do it with the modems
(unless, like i said, i get some kinda emulator software)
again, too much trouble
looks like my idea is dead :P

If both comp's have USB port you can now get USB to USD cable that will do this for you then just use connection wizard to set up a Lan.
-
Yeah, but they can't be classified as excelling in affordability.
For ease, merely make a purchase of an obsolete IEEE 1284 cable.

Not sure what the costs elsewhere but here about USD 30.00.
