After downloading a video and going to Preview/Play, the audio is there but the video is just a swirling (although rather artsy) pattern on the screen. What is it? Is there a filter or something needed or have I just wasted my time?

Swriling video I have never heard of anything like that. try download kazaa lite codec pack on the home page above.
