Song Request: VH1, that song with the unique guitar in the intro

This has been bugging me all day, but I'm looking for the name of a song.
It was featured on one of VH1's shows (I love the 90s I think) and this guy was talking about the strange guitar noise in the intro. It's a smooth song, but that guitar in the intro almost sounds like metal for a second. The singer's voice gets tripped out in the end because he raises his pitch and stuff.
I'd say it's theme is pretty dark.
