The "best" what?
Leftover, second-rate, music tracker?
If they both have the same amount of torrents..woudln't it mean softmp3 is a better site considering it has less members?..
yeah basically.
I meant to write ...next best.
I'm not saying its good like oink but its whats left. Its growing, just needs a crapload more torrents.
@J.A., why would it make it better? Means less seeds and peers. STM has nearly double the # of users. Unless half of them do not care about their ratio then they become leechers and then seeders.
I think they're both awful to be quite honest.
Trance and electronic music as far as the proverbial eye can see, without a hint of variety in the selection.
Thanks, but no thanks.
I'll take my Usenet and Soulseek any day.
you can play with those until OiNK returns but sticking them 'forever'...please, not me.
Stmusic aint that bad, its no oink but there's no alternative. I'm just trying to point people to whats left.
I tried soulseek a while back but there's so many files, bitrates, same song has 10 different sizes, different lengths and different bitrates.
If oink comes back, it wont be for a long time. In the meantime you gotta download music :)
They're both good, even 1 seeder is good for music cause its so small most of the time.
Why are you so against stmusic and softmp3?
I dont know stats for stm, but softmp3 is 3874% seeder/leecher ratio.
Holy shit STM went up 120 users in half an hour.
I'm not against either of them, but providing the appellation of "best" for either is a bit nonsensical.
They both provide a specialized type of music for a select listening group. They "advertise" themselves as 0-day and scene, when they are anything but.
If you're going to go with the best, go with something which offers an equal selection of musical genres and an immense amount of files such as, again, Soulseek or Usenet.
EDIT: 3874% is awful, by the way.
yes Skizo, i agree with you its not the best. Ive said it numerous times already.
But for me its either stmusic or soulseek and I prefer torrenting for music.
57360 users so far.
usenet costs money
soulseek i dont trust it.
38.74 seeds for 1 leech is a pretty good ratio. FTN doesn't have a ratio that good.
Yes, selection is terrible thing.
How many of your 9 posts does this "numerous" consist of?
Anyhow, yes, oink offered quite a bit as far as music went, but even in the torrent world there are better alternatives than STMusic and/or softMP3.
Is there something better than stmusic? Go ahead and post it.
How many times do I have to tell you its not the best? Are you dumb or something try reading posts. I tell you multiple times and now you're arguing with me about how many times....its greater than 1.

Please enlighten us. I would love to start checking out a few alternative trackers now that Oink is sausage.Quote:

Although I love usenet, the lack of comments attached to posts makes it difficult at times to evaluate a download. That's one benefit trackers have over usenet. I can't count the number of times someone posted on Oink that track "such-and-such" is bad or is a transcode. Saves me bandwidth and time.
ive just joined stmusic and softmp3 today, in case either of them become the "new" oink.
stmusic and softmp3 were both nice sites to use on the side of oink..
but now, when you don't have a good source beside them... they just look bad.
i'm so glad I have IT or I'd be jumping off walls trying to find some decent music today.
PS: VIPMusic > STMusic+SoftMP3, figured I should throw that in there. :yup:
vipmusic blows
soulseek:
you download from 1 peer per file not like limewire, kazaa
you have queues
slow download speed, like 5kb/s-15kb/s
questionable varying lengths on songs, like the same song will appear 3:00 mins long and 3:35 mins long
transcodes
no comments on the files, with torrents you can post comments about the file
shitty useless "rooms"
Torrents are the way to go.
Usenet is the way to go.
i refuse to pay for usenet.
its torrents or nothing afaic.
jeez break it up there gents, to each his own. try out and if u like it use it
Stmusic is opening up user uploads both scene and user encoded mp3's.
First in regard to Soulseek: of course there are advantages to the torrent method of filesharing, thus a client like slsk will lack in some areas. The "variable length" of songs you mentioned can at least sometimes be explained by mislabeled music and I've more than often found some gem or live version that way. Back when I still used Soulseek, I loved the idea of themed rooms because you'll find users with similar interests to yours and their shared folders sometimes have gems you wouldn't have thought of searching for. So not everything is negative ;)
While the poll on the main page looks impressive (67% of 3766 users voted that yes, they were oink users and just signed up there) on paper, there's little to suggest that STMusic is anything more than an established and good scene music tracker. Maybe that will change in time but for now, the tracker is not much different from filemp3 or other standard scene-music trackers. That's not really what oink was popular for ;)
Theres a ton to suggest it. It has a 60,000 users and they are opening up user uploads. So not only does it have decent scene stuff but people will be able to upload their already downloaded scene albums and home made rips.
The next closest to size has 20,000 users.
User upload have been added.
62,000 users and 300 user uploaded torrents in half a day. 14,000 scene torrents too.
Its officially the new oink.
finally they have decided to let users upload...! nice move :)Quote:
2007-10-25 - A new server has been ordered to cope with the new unexpected increased userbase and deal with the 500 errors, it should be provisioned sometime next week. Thank you for your patience.
i love this tracker its good
but, they need to improve their design.... i think they are making nice moves, and with a new design more attractive they will got better chances.
The site gives me 500 - Internal Server Error.
thats probably server overload, they really need to upgrade server
yeah most of the oink userbase has gone to stmusic
i reckon STMusic is going to be the new oink too.
dont worry about the Server 500 errors, thats due to overload from the new users, and they have ordered a new server to deal with this problem.
Yay, finally high quality music on STM. 320kbps cbr, vbr v0 and flac :) It's a good step for the tracker and as I said before, given time they'll grow member- and quality-wise. I still don't believe they'll ever be a second oink, but they are indeed on the way to becoming the best alternative out there.
They should have closed their sign up and did the necessary upgrades before allowing all the new user sign ups.
Bigger doesn't mean better.
the search there blows
Search is fine. I`m sorry libble still sucks with its 5,000 users lol.
I've been a user there for some time, the staff reacts quickly to suggestions (proof on the user upload piece).
This site had 16,000 users 4 days ago...give it some time, it will blow up.
Get in while you can...
I'll give ST thumbs up
The moderators are really helpful and reacts quickly on suggestions as well as bug fix. They are adding new features all the time. It is now possible for user to upload stuff and they site are going through a major upgrade.
They new server should arrive next week and I am sure that ST can handle a lot more users. Sign up while it last because they will probably reach their limit shortly.
