Windows flaw could spawn DoS attacks
[news=http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/2681/mssp20rg.gif]A newly discovered and as-of-yet unpatched security vulnerability in Windows XP could let an attacker remotely crash computers.
The flaw affects the Windows Remote Desktop Service, which lets users access their Windows PC from a remote location. An attacker could remotely exploit the problem to crash a victim's PC in what's known as a denial-of-service attack, according to a posting on the Security Protocols Web site earlier this week. The user would then see the Windows "blue screen of death."
Microsoft knows of the security flaw and is working on a patch, a company representative said on Friday.
Hey its a joke right ? Explains everything now . lol

Re: Windows flaw could spawn DoS attacks
I wonder how long it will take them to come out with a patch :pinch:
edit: just hecked windowsupdate and there were 3 new "hi priority" patches for me to install.
Not sure if they're related to this, or when their release was.

those fixes were introduced on about the 12th or 13th and i am fairly certain they are not related to this vulnerability.

I just leave the remote desktop off, as i never use it anyway.

I think the Remote Desktop sevice is Off by default in SP2.
I dont think this is a huge concern for end users so much but it is a big thing
for companys as they use the Remote Desktop a lot.
Also, someone will probably make a little viri that infects the machine and
puts the Remote Desktop On and there we go.
It's not that difficult to turn services On and Off in XP, the firewall is a joke in XP. The "userfriendliness" of XP is a way getting the control.
:D
Couple tips I can think off against these things are:
Use Antiviri and Firewall, update the definitions often.
Dont run it with adminisitrator priviledges.
And patch that box! (maybe the patch is called Longhorn.)
Or, check out Linux!
Re: Windows flaw could spawn DoS attacks
a vulnerability in windows? how odd
Re: Windows flaw could spawn DoS attacks
i use a third party program for controlling my pc when i'm not at home, very handy most times but would never use the windows program so guess it does not affect me.
Re: Windows flaw could spawn DoS attacks
i never knew windows had vulnerabilities! :O
