Canonical, following their announcement on Monday, have now made the final version of Ubuntu 9.04, also known as "Jaunty Jackalope", available on the Ubuntu.com website. The new version of Ubuntu promises faster booting, Gnome 2.26, a new notification system and many other updated packages.

Ubuntu 9.04 uses the Linux 2.6.28 kernel (after plans were dropped to incorporate 2.6.29) and the X.Org server 1.6. Ext4 is supported at installation time as the root file system, but Ext3 is still the default.

The server version of Ubuntu 9.04 comes with a technology preview of Eucalyptus, which allows administrators to create a private cloud from their clusters. The Eucalyptus API matches the Amazon EC2 API and allows virtual machines to be dynamically created or configured as an Amazon S3 compatible storage manager. Ubuntu Server 9.04 also simplifies the configuring of mail services with a new mail server stack, dovecot-postfix, which suports SMTP, POP3 and IMAP with TLS and SASL.

Images of the Desktop, Server and Ubuntu Netbook Remix versions of the operating system are available to download. Ubuntu 8.10 users can upgrade over the internet by opening the Update Manager and clicking the Upgrade button as described the instructions given on the Ubuntu site.

The final release is scheduled to be released April 27, 2009 at 10am (Samoa time), but since you asked, it's been delayed one hour.
