is there a hierarchy? Interesting question, some would argue yes and no possibly.

Usenet and Warez both have been around since the beginning. Now actually to say this would not be correct because Warez is a name coined for software piracy, for people that want to label themselves as, 'Warez Gropus', also the name seems to have drifted around to a point that when most people simply say Warez it's means the world of piracy, in a simple way yes this is true.

Warez was an original group that started at Warez.com

To be REAL Warez is to be a follower of their cult of software piracy and their views, whatever they may have been. To say 'Warez' and say this is the world of software piracy is not correct. In the beginning crackers and hackers that prided themselves did not associate with Warez, because many Warez sites were all pushing the world of Porn, and cheesy websites that did nothing more then give you a million popups and site redirects to nothing.

When the original Warez group started there was a since of quality to it, but as the name Warez spread, so did crap.

Real software piracy is piracy, and Warez is Warez. The Wiki below is not 100% correct on Warez either, obvisouly from someone that was never around when Warez.com first started...

    Usenet:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet

    Warez:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warez

    After Usenet came P2P:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peer-to-peer

Two of the biggest names then that started this P2P revolution would of been Napster and Kazaa.

After the first P2P networks came then it was Bittorrent, and torrents are where we are today.

Of course throw into the mix now online filesharing and storage sites, where Rapidshare has made quite a stir in things to take on some of this market, but then this isn't really file sharing through a P2P application either, this is just downloading off of a site.

    Bittorrents:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_%28protocol%29

    Rapidshare:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RapidShare

Well there you have it, the hierarchy of the last 25 close to 30 odd years...

The wikipedia article on warez does a horrible job of explaining distribution channels.

For the original poster, yes, in a sense there is a hierarchy of privilege as it relates to accessing the latest releases.

    Check this article: http://www.informit.com/articles/art...29894&seqNum=5

Keep in mind that it was written in 2002, before the rise of torrents. Where it mentions other P2P apps, just mentally add BitTorrent and you'll understand.

I thought the OP was asking about the hierarchy, not the distribution of piracy, all though I'm sure he might be interested in reading this, but as I read through it, it is not at all correct, in the fact that you don't COIN pirated software as Warez, and that is what that article has done, making people think that ALL pirated software means 'Warez' and this is not true.

Look back and read my first reply, I re edited it. Also have you ever used Usenet before? If so you will NOTICE that there are Warez groups, along with software binary groups, WHY, because Warez are GROUPS, groups that mean mostly piracy, but also Anarchy, porn, and the blackmarket, you name it, when it comes to the Underworld that is what Warez embodies, at least now it does, I'm not sure that was the original idea of the first original group that started Warez, but it's what it is now.

If you really want to know something hackers/crackers that pride their art of software cracking and reverse engineering, most of them despise the name Warez, since most of the sites out there are just crap and porn.

Most of Wiki's take on Warez is total crap too.

    1. the release is uploaded to the private release groups folder on the FTP (and on affil FTP's) which is not available to the FTP users (yet).

    2. once all of the affil FTP's have it. the servers run a special command that copy's the release into the "public" part where users can download it.

3a. the release is spread to other non-affil within seconds by racers.

3b. is it uploaded to scene torrent sites with insane pre's (ex.: SCC, FTN, ScT)

    4. its uploaded to other torrent sites/usenet/posted for XDCC on irc chans/rapidshare (yes, i have seen rapidshare with very good pre's)

    5. hits public torrent sites such as mininova.

    6. finnally reaches p2p networks (limewire, bearshare)

This is a generalized statement as to how some pirated software may be distributed about, but that is not to say it's everthing, down to every last bit in the world of software piracy, that would be absurd.

So actually if your question is, 'How is software piracy distributed'?

To put it simply, it's cracked, and uploaded to servers and then it just gets spread around by different means.

But to imply there is ONE STANDARD to this, is not so, in that sense there is no hierarchy. The hierarchy only exists within groups that maintain one, and distribution of software can happen in many ways, shapes and forms...

What lukke seems to be suggesting is there are steps to this as in 1. 2. 3. and that is just not true for the entire world of piracy. People will do things in any way shape, or form they see fit to distribute software, there are no real steps that someone can put down like this and say this is the formula.

This question is like asking, 'What is the hierarchy of the Black Market'? Sure there are ways in which to a large part it works, and it's a way in which the general public perceives it, but if anyone here is going to suggest there are steps to how the blackmarket works, that's absurd there are none. This is a free for all, you do it in any way you see fit that works best for you.

the reason i wanted to know is cause i can get dvd's 2 weeks before they hit the stores, but i dont know where i should upload them or whatever. recently i got a screener and handed it to a release group and they had me talk to them on irc and upload it to an "ftp" in the netherlands whatever that is. but yeah i wanted to make sure that i was doing the right thing by giving it to a group or if i should up it my self.
