How do I

get sub titles to run with a film,have d/loaded a french film and want to add english subtitles to it,what program do I need?

No it is a avi. file ,I've d/loaded some subtitles and they are .srt file

if you use media player classic
make sure the .srt is in the same folder as the av i and it should play it automaticlaly

in vlc i think in menu somewhere "load subtitles"
