    Ah Big Situation...
    My dad said he would pay for most of the parts for my first computer build, but (i hate buts, but i like butts, anyways...) he said if i mess up and the money goes down the drain, then all my privliges will be taken away...
    What do you guys think I should do...
    (He gave me a price limit of "As Cheap As Possible")

    whether or not i fail was because i was wondering how do u know where to plug and chug the wires into the mobo. Are all mobos the same or do they come with a manual. Also optical drives i was going to use from existing computers, sorry for not mentioning..

    and the processor you showed me, is that still good because i want a good processor that will last me a while until i get an X2

    also...wtf...do i need thermal paste for? do i have all the fans i need.

    I think you need to study more about all you possibilities before you decide to build a system.

    You also need to start to make your own opinions and evaluations about if something is good for you or not. I cannot know all your needs. It could be that a 3000+ and that 6100 GeForce is way more powerful than you expect. Or it could also be that you need a 4400+ and a GeForce 7800GT. I cannot know these things for you.

    The best thing to do, when making a new computer, is to wait. Keep looking at what there is, and never choose first thing you see and like. There might, and almost always something better.

    ok here is my comment and a suggestion

    building or buying a pc is like buying a car.
    you have to have a budget and you have to know what you are going to use (car or pc) for. YOU NEED TO set a fixed amount that is for building/purchasing this pc and then keep to it.

    you need to educate yourself and your dad on costs
    get organized....your examples on this thread, adding up is an amount of $565usd
    you cannot get the latest and greatest with that money range.

    with your dad's help, create a wish list
    purpose of this machine is....for school work
    ....strictly for games
    .....hobbies, other interests
    .....shared by all family members and all ages

    some questions....?who is principally using it?
    ?how long are you planning to keep system?
    ?are you going to make it upgradeable?
    ?how much is dad "thinking" a pc costs(sticker shock)
    ?window shop and do a show and tell(test build on line
    for ideas of current cost vs performance.
    you have to know what you will need this pc for (so you and your dad
    will not be disappointed.)

    read a whole lot, have some patience,keeping asking questions
    take notes.....yes it is exciting, preparing for a build....but preparing
    is most of the battle.
    we were all at one time, in your shoes, take a deep breath and smile
    someday you will help a forum member with his first build.
    keep us posted.
    note well............this forum has a lot of threads on builds and costs
    do some searching and learn by example.

    Umm as VB said , you are better off with and amd 3000 , if you are looking for as cheap as possible pc, otherwise gettinh a 3500 for a cheap ass/really bad video card isnt really a smart idea. When it comes to speed, AMD focuses on performance not speed. My current amd 754 skt processor operates at 2.0ghz and guess what? it loads windows at least 2-3 times faster than my petium 4 2.8ghz in my hp pavillion. So again a 3000+ is still a great processor, i dont see the need in getting a 3500 unless you are trying a really high end pc. And by the time the 3000 becomes out of date, AMD will probably introduce a new socket...

    About the motherboard, the onbard sound on most motherboards are good, no need to change them unless you are buying some really expensive speakers.... The onbard graphics arent something i'd wanna use to play the latest pc game like FEAR .... you really want atleast a 128mb card...

    I got my pc over a year ago and it cost a total of 771$ including shipping... by now the value would be like 500-600$ if i were to buy it today..
