no risk. at leat not as far as I've experienced with opticals, extra HDDS, etc.
you only screw yourself if there's programs installed that call to that directory
just don't go trying to f00k about with your C: drive and you should be OK

Skizo, have you check to see if the drive shows in disk management or device manager?
Sorry for not responding to replies earlier, I've been out of town.

Yes, the drive is a disc drive. It's a DVD-RW to be specific. I did check 'Disc Management' but I didn't see it there.

Does it show up in the Device Manager?

Does it show up in the BIOS?

It shows up in the 'Device Manager' with a yellow "!". When I click on it, the 'Device Status', it states:

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

    Try right click->uninstall.

Also see if it shows up in your BIOS.

Can you elaborate on why I would want to uninstall it? So I could try reinstalling it maybe? I don't have any driver discs or anything.

    I'll reboot and check BIOS.

EDIT: Yes, it appears in BIOS under IDE: SECONDARY MASTER

    Uninstall it and reboot.

Windows will detect it when it restarts and it will reinstall it.

    Uninstalled.
    Rebooted.
Bubble opens that states Windows Found New Hardware. Then bubble opens that states New Hardware Found: NEC DVD-RW. But it still doesn't appear in My Computer and the Device Manager is giving me the same statement/error that I listed above in post #24

EDIT: This sounds similar - http://www.computing.net/windows2000...rum/63399.html Any opinions?
