Need help with PC, stays powered, wont POST.

I'm trying to help out a friend whos recently moved. On setting uo his PC in his new house it powers up as soon as the power cord is plugged in the PSU but it wont boot or POST with no beep codes or signal to the monitor.

So far I've tried booting without any drives attached, removing the ram to see if I could get a beep code, I also tried removing the power switch plug from the mobo incase the switch was stuck but it still powers on as soon as its plugged in.

I'm thinking its the mobo but as my friend's pretty low on cash at the moment I like to be as sure as possible.
Any advice is more than welcome.

Is there a short somewhere?

Like a screw or something wedged between board and chassis, connecting two solder points underneath the board?

Have you tried to clear the CMOS?

Try this: Connect the power cord and then press the power button on the front of the case. Hold it until it powers off. Then press it again momentarily.

We have an eMachines in the shop exhibiting exactly the same symptoms.

How long to try this approach?
The cows have returned home and the damn thing is still powered on.
My index finger and forearm are numb.

We're calling for a new board.
Had quite a streak of bad eMachines system boards of late...in most cases it's easier to use a standard (non-eMachine) replacement than attempt to get the real thing. Usually all you lose is the functionality of the media card reader ( a very proprietary connector).

Yeah sorry VB1234, i forget to mention I already tried both of you're suggestions.
I'm pretty sure theres nothing wedged down the back of the board but I'll have a look if it comes to replacing the board.

I think I might follow clocker and try a new board on it, theres no card reader on this one so it should be ok.

Thanks for not leaving us spectators hanging in suspense. Seriously its nice to hear final results to problems(especially when its a fix). Some people just leave you hanging...
