    It is purely to make the price seem less.
    Mind you there is false advertising in the U.S. because you have to pay tax on top of the price shown (depending on the state). So you can't buy anything in the dollar store where "everything is $1." if all you have is $1.
    Same with the adverts for the dollar menu at BK MC's etc. They show a man that is hungry but he only has $2. they say he can by 2 items for that price, omitting either "eat in" or "take out" tax

    it’s an election with no Democrats, in one of the whitest states in the union, where rich candidates pay $35 for your votes. Or, as Republicans call it, their vision for the future.

    Love them or hate them, at least Walmart recognized how insulting this whole (99) marketing ploy was to customers and refused to use it.

    wal mart still has prices like 99.

    also there is no tax on food items so you could get that in a dollar store like candy.

    If only they could match price shown in the isles with the price charged at the checkout more often

    I'll be honest I have only been in a dollar store a few times and don't recollect seeing food.
