Maintaining Ratios On A Mac

I'm a newbie at this...

But I can't seem to figure out how to maintain an upload and download ration using BitTorrent on the Mac. I have the latest version, and the torrent comes down, and then just waits and waits and waits while seeding. I've left my machine going for 24 hours, with no noticable change. Is this how I get my upload ratio working? What am I doing wrong?

what being on a mac have to do with anything?

I thought it might be a situation particular to the Mac client... I can't seem to figureout how to see my "uploading" amount, like I can in an FTP client or Limewire.
