    Actually, it was 'fred' before 'thread'.

    The bloke who invented forums was an English chap called Fred Dinage (sadly, he's shuffled off the mortal coil now), at first every topic was called a 'fred' but that soon got changed to 'thread' when America decided to change the spelling.
