At school I use indesign to make logos and sigs, but I cant find a working torrent for it at home so im forced to use PS

I want to use the pen tool to make a curved line, but it just fills in the line and makes a solid figure.

I will make a "s" and it will fill in the gaps. How do i make it just do a line?

If I understand your question right then you need to use the 'paths' feature:

Thanks, is it possible to make it so the line isnt all pixelated? Like a smooth line?

You could try using the pencil tool instead, it tends to have smoother lines. Alternatively you could just try a small blur on the pen tool after having made the shape you desire, that should eliminate the pixelated edges.
