Yea the version I grabbed (not from MS's official site) tried to connect to the internet and then posted an error saying it couldn't verify Genuine Windows when I blocked it

Oh, I got it from Softpedia. I don't even think I was connected to the internet at the time cause I had AV software off. Well, mine was Genuine anways...so...sorry...

Yea the MS site version calls home to verify as well (and doesn't install if it can't validate).

Pirate friendly versions do seem to be appearing via P2P networks though but you may have to sift through to find a working one (and do a bit of digging to find out what's been done to neatralise them I guess).
