I just got into bittorent for the sole purpose of acquiring software. I have downloaded the files. Do i need to burn them to disc to run/install them? Can anyway help me get my feet wet?

Depends on what you've downloaded, I'd imagine.
Obviously an .exe can be run from wherever you have it stored on your machine and will install the program to wherever you choose.
If you have an .iso file, you'd need to burn it onto a disc before being able to use the program.

What i would do is download nero and burn the iso files. Nero is a quick and easy program to get around.
