Okay, I just got one two nights ago for 200 bucks on sale. Yey, but when I hooked it up and all, my computer only say it's 232GB. What happened to the other 18GB? I have all the latest updates and all.

Did I just get rip? Someone please explain to me. ^_~

    Thanks.

    It's because manufacturers say 1000MB = 1GB, when in reality 1024MB = 1GB.
They also use 1000KB = 1MB when that's wrong, too.

In your case, the MB bios needs to be updated to support 48-bit Logical Block Addressing (LBA), or your limit will be 128GB.

    Hardware manufacturers assume that 1GB = 10^9 = 1000,000,000
    Software suppliers assume that 1GB = 2^30 = 1,073,741,824

    250 x 10^9 / 2^30 = 232.8

You should have read the small print.

It's the same for any storage device. For MP3 says it's 512mb, but I can't even fit 500mb worth of music on it.

Also, don't forget that part of the free space will be used for the index/table.

Damn, i really thought it would be 250gb when it say 250.

Oh well, 200 bucks for 232gb + it's external is a good deal.
