Desktop Icons Vanished

My friends PC has lost the desktop icons, when I try to drag an icon from the start menu to the desktop nothing happens, also the the standard IE toolbar buttons have vanished, there should an option to check or uncheck the standard buttons but it's not there. I have removed all the malware and all the useless programs she had downloaded and the PC is running fine accept for Icon problem, I guess this requires a registry adjustment but I'm not sure about what I should alter...........any help would be appreciated.

Right-click desktop > Arrange icons by... > Show Desktop Icons needs to be checked.

Maybe you've already tried this but you could right-click on the desktop, choose properties, choose the desktop tab, click the customize desktop button, and check the ones you want there.
