Uh depends what you want?? Though I don't think spam is a problem. viruses and Spyware yes big prob.

if your willing to pay some cash then go for newsgroups. if not Bittorrent.

    Learn more about bittorrent:

    http://btfaq.com/serve/cache/1.html

if you decide to go for Bittorrent should use UTorrent: http://www.utorrent.com/download.php
of coure i'm not biased in any way

you could always try Limewire or Kaza they're good

This is so subjective..so here is my choice ... Lopster http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/w...0.zip?download

This is a multi-sourcing client with irc compatibility... and you can log onto my filesharing network with it

bittorents run best for me, and I have never had a problem with spam and viruses. other than that, emule is the only other program I really run much. it seems to have a good selection of files and is reasonably easy to use.
Plan for the worst, hope for the best

Is usenet worth it? And how does it work compared to bittorrents?

    Yes it is.
NZB files (this forum host them along with many other sources) work similar to torrents. Load it into your client, and it will download what you want. Just like a torrent.

Best of all, you upload nothing to anyone. So you're not connecting to anyone or thing but a server. It's virtually impossible to get caught using. To the best of my knowledge no one has in it's 25 year history.

You always download at full speed (this is wonderful. I went from downloadind Divx to DVDs)
    Your downloads always complete
No bleeping rato to worry about.

It's worth the maybe 15 dollars a month.

I use Bittorrent for large files (movies, software etc.) and Limewire for music. I think they are okay.

Check out DC++ and take a glimpse of other peoples programs that they want to share. Also connecting to hubs also depends on how much you have to offer. Say you have 50 GB to share total then you will be able to connect to that min share hub at start up. This is a great source to Dling your files.
