I do not have any software or whatever to link to, but I do have a few helpful sites that I use. (I am also trying to learn Japanese)

I purchased a few things related to learning Japanese.

Here are some links to helpful stuff:

Learn Japanese audio files (They are by Pimsleur I think)
    http://sushibarnetwork.com/index.php?name=Downloads&c=3

I think you are only able to download one file at a time and use only one connection per file if using a download manager.

look on emule/edonkey for pimsleur japanese stuff. I found 3 sets of audio lessons and that covers a lot of material slowly but thoroughly.
(I think the pimsleur stuff is in archives and/or cd images)

I had my hands on some books by MangaJin, called learning japanese through comics. It was the most helpful tool I have found yet. Unfortunately I lost it in my last move but if you can track it down then pick it up.

Mangajin might be available as back dated issues.Check out their website http://www.mangajin.com
They could also be available for D/L someplace.Got to check up on that.
What is definitely available for D/L is a book called Kanji de Manga which is basically teaching basic Kanji through a comic book approach.
