    My understanding is that Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink actually means "Vennegoor or Hesselink", so it means that he wants to use both surnames as opposed to being called Vennegoor and being from Hesselink.

    Is that right.

    Must have been a typo down at the birth certificate office, or undecisive parents. Never heard of the use of "of" in a dutch name.
    Your analysis seems correct.
