    Q: What is overclocking?

A: Overclocking is simply running hardware (such as a CPU or Video Card) at a clock speed higher than what it is rated for. Sounds simple but there is much to learn and there are many many good sites that can explain this. You need to learn as much as you can before going any further. Overclocking can damage your CPU or other system components if you don’t know what your doing! If you want to do this successfully, then you need to put a little time and effort into it.

Many motherboards have options to tweak the speeds, or to exceed the recommended clock rate, hence the "overclocking" name.

Heat is a vital factor. The more you are sucessful at keeping your components cool, the faster your PC will run (most of the time). You see, computers generate alot of heat, and the higher the clock speed, the more heat emitted, and of course the more fans required thus more noise .

I saw in the PC Pro magazine a computer had a twin Intel Xeon 3.06GHz which had been overclocked to 3.7GHz . That's a massive 640MHz increase! . It was carried out via quality temperature maintanence.

Duties are not performed for duty's sake, but because their neglect would make the man uncomfortable. A man performs but one duty - the duty of contenting his spirit, the duty of making himself agreeable to himself.
