Converting entire iTunes music library.

I have about 200 albums in my iTunes library. Each of these are cds that I have ripped at 320kb/s as the bitrate. Originally I thought it would be cool to have all my music at this quality, but now I am running out of hard drive space fast, and now my iPod holds less songs with the increased filesize. (Duh on me) I want to convert them all to 192kb/s. Now what I request is the simplest and easiest way to convert all of my songs to the previously stated bitrate with the least amount of work. I would like to keep all the songs in their same directores and same tag information if at all possible. It doesnt matter how long it will take, I will just leave it on during the day. Nobody has a suggestion on how to do this? I have searched and have come up with no results. Can someone suggest something?

I could be wrong, but I really don't think it would be a good idea. I'm pretty sure you would have to make another encoding of the original WAV file at 192...

Re-encoding an MP3 from one bit rate to another, if possible, would be like making a dub of a dub of VHS, losing quality every time. You have to realize that MP3 is a really lossy format already. If you re-encode it, it would be 192k based off the 320k, not the original WAV file.

I would suggest you try the software called DBpowerAmp, and then instaling i--Tunes/Apple codec. You will be able to convert you music with keeping same tags to 192kbps, you also have the option of keeping files in same dir and deleting the old ones all in one go, unfortunely you can only do one dir at a time. I use DBpowerAmp and have had no problems, excellent peice of software.

Wow finally some help. Thank you very much. I was going to try DP power amp, but I don't know how I would do what you are talking about? And at the previous poster, my files aren't encoded as MP3's they are encoded in AAC at 390 kb/s. I wanted to convert them to AAC 190kb/s. Keep the 320kbs. The other way requires too much work because the only way to get true 192kbs would be to rip all your cds again. Buy a bigger hard drive, it's worth the money, I just bought a 400gb Seagate for $100. And you should be able to cope with the ipod disk space.

I agree. You can downsample a 320 to a 192 but it won't be like what a CD ripped originally at 192 would sound like.

But if you do want to go that route, just do a creative search with the word "batch" in it.

Like "batch mp3 encode".

Download the program, install select aac files, dbpoweramp will them prompt you stating you dont have the correct codec and will open a page from which you can download the correct codec.

Once that done select files again and select/tick same dir + delete older files and start, simple as that.

Not sure if rmiller is refering to darkforces post but this is not difficult it is piss and is alot easier than re-ripping all your cds again and quality is great, i have not noticed any loss in quality at all and have changed rate from 320 to 192 on many of my albums.
