I've been living in the UK for 3 years and in that time I've been back in Belgium twice, for a total of 8 days.
I just received this e-mail from our ministry of foreign affairs:

    Betreft: federale parlementaire verkiezingen 2007

    Geachte Mevrouw/Geachte Heer,

    Hoogachtend,

    Karel De Gucht
    Minister van Buitenlandse Zaken

They're basically telling me that I have to get back to them before the 1st of february so I can vote in the federal elections.
    In Belgium voting is compulsory.
So if I don't vote I get fined

So... they're wanting me to vote for a parlement that does not affect my life whatsoever.
Not only that, I don't follow Belgian politics so I don't have a clue who does what these days

    What's the use?

    Doesn't work like that.
I'm on the register of the embassy, so I'm expected to vote.
I suppose I could vote blank

yeah but that's not the point.

What's the use in voting for a government in a country you don't live in?
