Thread: For Men Only

1. #31
Some points to think over. The PGA has never had a rule against any gender. It's not the MPGA.* Women have played before, although not in fifty years, and a woman will play in one more tournament this year. She was not taking a slot away from a progressing golfer. Every tournament has "exemptions" to hand out and the Colonial had eleven. Such slots go to a variety of people for a variety of reasons. Her publicity and the attendant $$$ made the Colonial, and CBS, think it was a good deal for them. It was. Contrary to what you may have heard, and what's been said in this thread, she doesn't lack the length to play Colonial. Her drives compared very favorably to her two playing partners. Had she not let the nerves get to her the second day, she could easily have made the cut and beaten quite a few men. Her limitation is really lack of wrist strength to handle the rough and the fact that's she's just a so-so putter. I don't see a token appearance like this as world-shaking. If she competed on a regular basis, she should, and would have to, go to Q-School. If she tried to get exemptions for every tournament, she would get turned down, after the novelty wore off. I don't think all need to worry about her competing week in - week out. OTOH, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see her become a fixture at the Colonial - the only tournament site that really fits her game.

*The LPGA does have a membership limitation to ladies only. This is perfectly legal under US laws.

I am quite surprised by the ferocity and duration of this thread for two reasons-

1) I didn't think anyone here was a passionate golfer

2)Having been twice married I have learned (too late, alas) NEVER to underestimate the fairer sex.

The newest generation of female atheletes ( exemplified by the Williams sisters ) are taking women's sports to new and previously undreampt of levels of strength, endurance and , for lack of a better word, masculine competitiveness. There is nothing remotely ladylike about their tennis. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect to see this trend continue. Certainly, there will always be sports where mere gender will always confer an advantage ( unless you are East German maybe), but in more and more skill-based games ( including F1 racing) there is no reason to automatically dismiss the possibility of a successful female competitor. Given the same opportunities and training from a young age, females are just as capable as males. Maybe even more so.
If you've had kids you will be familiar with the fact that girls become stronger and more coordinated than boys at an earlier age. This would be a major advantage in early training in say, go kart racing, which is a vital stepping stone to big time racing. Given enough support there could be an upcoming crop of girl motorsports participants who would rule many forms of racing. They would have more experience at any given age level and wouldn't be afflicted with testosterone poisoning, which ends many a promising career ( i.e.- you can't win if you can't finish, and you can't finish if you CRASH&#33.

Oh well.
All this just because ONE woman played in a golf tournament?
Much ado about nothing.

People, has anyone played mixed doubles tennis? I have loads of times and its almost a completely different game. There is etticate (if thats how u spell it&#33 that doesnt exist it mens doubles. For example dont hit a 90mph ball straight at a woman at the net. Its even the case in pro tennis.

I think it depends on the sport. Some sports that could accomodate women don't, and should. I agree with the separate 'mixed' sections as it not only accomodates different gender but also adds a completely new aspect to a sport.

But to be honest why not let a woman play a 'traditional' mens sport. If women can't, then they can't, If they can, who cares?

Quite a few, apparently. As for the steroid question, they don't test. There's no belief that steroids really help one play golf. I'll repeat that Sorenstam's length, which could, arguably, be helped by anabolic training, was not her problem at all. Some uninformed media assumed such, but the knowledgable sector knew all along that the probems lay with her short game and putting. For those who watched, did anyone ever see an iron shot back up? Nope. You can't play with the big boys without it.

I don't know. Do they also test for feminine testosterone? Do you think that maybe Annika Sorenstam has a little too much?

9. Lounge - #39
Lord, am I not writing in English? They test for nothing. Understand me, nothing! Zip, nada, nichts. Steroids only help as an adjunct to weight training to shorten the recovery period between sessions. Before Tiger, no one even considered weights. Well, maybe Player and his pushups. In this context, why, in the name of common sense would anyone test the first lady to play in a PGA event in 50 years for testosterone?? When they don't even test the men?? What planet are the people around here from, anyway?
