No active mixer devices avail?!

Im freakin stumped ( not that hard to do ) I have no sound on my recently built system and when I go to control panel and click on show volume I get " No active mixer devices..." I have on board ac97 sound so I should be okay hardware wise right? I have also googled this question and got a bunch of answers that have not worked. I am thinking I have to re-install windows but if any of the great minds here can help me without re-installing that would be great. Thanks all you guys and gals!

I know this will sound stupid, but did you restart? I had this problem 2 days ago, for the life of me I couldn't figure it out. Then I restarted and the problem wasnt there anymore.

Yes I've installed ALL the needed updates and drivers. This is driving me nuts. I have restarted multiple times trying different things to no avail.
