I think this would go here not hardware, sorry if I'm wrong.

OK I have an 80gb HDD, I am the only user on my computer and my personal folder the "my documents" is 7.29GB (this includes all of my music and pictures, I currently have no movies on the computer) My Programs Files folder is 2.77GB, and my Windows Folder is 2.07 GB

    So 80gb - (7.29 + 2.77 + 2.07) = ~ 78GB

Now, I can understand that system restore takes up space (just under 3GB) so I' at 75 GB

I have no temporary downloads or anything in IRC and my temp files are all cleared (not that it would take up a substantial amount for cookies)

However, I currently have 18.7GB free and 50.8GB used, for a grand total of 69GB total

I am not a math major but something seems odd about this... I check spyware/adaware/viruses weekly... I run XP Pro (is that included in the windows folder or is that the 11GB from 80 to 69 or something different?)

    Thanks all...

You can lower the amount of space system restore takes.
You might have alot of .msi installers hanging
I suggest you run a system cleaner like ccleaner and reply how much it managed to empty.

Is that 80gb your only HDD ?
Then it should be 80-7.29-2.77-2.07 anyway ...
I can recommend this freeware (it's german, but should be intuitive) :
    http://www.jam-software.de/freeware/index.shtml
it gives you an overview of the space each folder / file is taking

    That's a good idea.

Here's another one that's more visual.

    Scroll down and download Showman.

Thank you very much, I used VB1234's, it shows basically what I said however, there are a few bits that are taking up .9 gb or .5 randomly, I will list them, because I have no idea what I need and what I can delete and how.

    (approximate amounts)
    IBM Tools: 1.5GB
    Pagefile.sys: 1.5GB
    Hiberfil.sys: 1GB
    \i386: .4GB

    Thank you very much,

    -Champ (Still Technically Challenged)

EDIT: Found a big "ghost" my documents and settings is 12gb, 7 are music and 4.5 are in a folder called Local Settings/Temp
(which I am having trouble locating, but I looked inside on showman, and there are 2 files a video_ts and an audio_ts, so my dumb @ss thinks thats a random DVD I may have tried to rip)

    thanks

Ok SHOWMAN IS GREAT!! It was a DVD file of something I had burned, and there was also tons of Temporary Int Files and history with full images and video from those videos you click download>open with (ok porn) anyway I am using Firefox and I have it so that it wont save all of the history past 0 days, what can I do to prevent this saving of items in a hidden file?

I don't think you can other than click " option show all fles " to see whats saved . I get it too , saved cue files when the wife and kids copy music and movies . 100 % had the right idea of using Ccleaner to help get rid of the crap .

Have you tried a program like TuneUp 2007 or Ncleaner to delete the files that accumulate over time ? ncleaner like its clone Ccleaner is a little more heavy duty and should be used with caution as you can't save or roll back . I like it but then again I know what I'm deleting . Necrofile is another you might want to look at .

    Ncleaner 2 : http://www.nkprod.ro/ncleaner/index.htm

Hey, Just used diskeeper and what not it told me 25free and 45 used, but when I use showman it shows 25 free with only 17 used, there are 28 unaccounted for GB, on another forum they suggested using Active Recovery to find out if somebody was using space (i am in a college network with wi-fi so that is possible) so far, it isn't done, but my hard drive has 6 partitions (only showed 2 in disc management) they are almost all FAT32 and 1gb, and one is about 100mb and FAT16

    Any thoughts?

Does that missing 28gb make sense to anybody?

thanks! I will try Ncleaner next
