i tried bcdedit and all it does is flashs a screen and goes away

it has no gui, you should be able to run it from cmd
I this Vista Boot Pro will be an easier choice

is definitely the way to go. you can rename the OS's
change the default OS
and the time it gives you on the boot up options screen

ok can i remove the boot manager then uninstall the program??
will the boot manager still be removed after the removal of vistaboorpro, or it will come back?

no vistabootpro only edits bcdedit, therefore you can deinstall it und your boot manager settings are saved.
