Newsleecher - Getting headers from subscribed groups

I'm using NL 3.8. The only feature I'm having problems with is the subscribed groups. I want to be able to check for new headers once or twice a day:
right click subscribed group->update ->results in "0" new headers.

I confirmed using binsearch.info that there are indeed new headers available.

What am I doing wrong? Is there a free newsreader that I can use to just monitor the groups for new headers?

I think I found the problem.

A group I manually subscribed to:
a.b.sounds.mp3.2000s


"a.b" is abreviated and is really "alt.binaries"
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.2000s should work.
