Every time I try to connect a new laptop with vista to my xp network it locks up the network, then I have to reset my router to get the network up again, any ideas peeps?

No ideas what your problem is, but I can guarantee it is not an XP-Vista issue since today I've done exactly what you've just described.
Perhaps vista is putting more strain on your router, hardware details from both of you might reveal a common item which could in turn point to a solution.
