    i leave my pc's on 24/7 for 2-3 years str8 then upgrade (minus reboots and what not).

    did u fix ur problem?

    I've never seen convincing proof one way or the other.
    We leave our shop PCs on all the time but I turn my home computers on/off and can't say I've seen any reliability issues directly attributable to either strategy.

    What's your thinking behind the "always on" approach?

    me... well, i just leave it on just cause. no real reason. that and the fact i'm ALWAYS dl'ing something.

    Computers heat up within the first few minutes and only heat up further if a load is put on them. They cool back down very quickly once the load is reduced. Even if the load is continuous, it reaches a maximum. It doesn't keep rising.

    Power management systems have been built into computers. I see that as one of many aspects of a design for maximizing efficient continuous use.
