Hi signed up to Astraweb and at first the speeds were great 850kbps (8mb) but now its just managing to get around 8.5kbps.

    What could be causing this?

I doubt it's my isp as they have never cut back my speed and am unlimted with them. (They are a small company, but a great one)

    8Mb/s = 1MB/s = 1024KB/s (B:byte; b:bit)

You need to install a bandwidth monitor software for example DUMeter, download as much as you can at 24 hours a days to test your download speed.

Try another NG (GigaNews because it's fastest) to download if speed doesn't match the value above, use encrypt SSL and/or choose port 80 (instead of 119).

Sometimes, ISP can detect encrypted UseNet NNTP packets and still throttle them (even encrypted SSL connection), in this situation, just change your ISP.
