My DHCP status counts down from 24 hours, that's why I assumed that it was a new IP every day.Originally posted by Luca_Snipes@17 June 2003 - 18:23
if you unplug your modem from all wires, leave it off for AT LEAST 5 hours and then reconnect - you MAY get a new IP - i'm on NTL but can't remember what the lease times are - but unless someone else takes your IP you'll just get the same one again when you reconnect the modem to NTL's network, this is due to the way that DHCP works
As other people have said - if you don't get yourself banned you won't have to change your IP
I was also told they do it for security reasons, more difficult to hit a moving target sort of thing. That ties in with what I am told of telewest which is also 24 hour changes.
Another thought occurs however. If you are using an NTL proxy then is there any need for the IP to change as any traffic comes through the proxy. Could this be why you have had the same IP for so long.
In Win98, doesnt winipcfg release your IP?
If I release, wait a couple of minutes then renew.....I get a different IP.
If I release then renew immediately, I renew my lease on the old IP...(effectively making it static if i do it 1st thing every morning)
This is Telewest though, they may have different lease's on the IP....
I havent got XP...but isnt ipconfig the same thing?

They (NTL) bumped me up from a 128kbps to 150 without asking !
can u believe that !?
i mean its only another 2 or 3 quid a month but you'd think they would at least ask !!
i hit 24/27k/s max.
Havn't read all the posts so just ignore this if your question has been answered already.
A. Leave your computer disconnected for 24 hours and the IP will re-set itself.
or..
B. Ring them up and tell them that you think someone dodgy has got your IP
addy and your worried they may do something to harm your computer.
They may change it, may not.
yes i got 24/27k/s the other day now i phoned them up bitched they put it back to 1mb and his 100+
