Now that's what we call a revelation.

Break Free from your seedbox and ratio oppressors, rise up Brothers and Sisters! The road is long, but the end....is near.

15 dollars a month though? What's the retention like and how much can you download?

I mean, I'll admit, it does look tempting. But on giganews the only thing I'd consider getting is the platinum one, which is 25$ a month - something I can't afford right now. Maybe if I had just a little bit more to spare.

What's the content like on newsgroups anyways? I've generally had no problem with bittorrent or some smart googling when I wanted to find something really obscure. But because of the retention on newsgroups I've always doubted I'd be able to find all the things I'd want.

Edit: Aw, come on. I'm no leech, though I do mainly use demonoid because it has more content. (And I have a good ratio on there, too, damn it.)
I don't have a problem with leaving my computer on to share back, but eh, different strokes and all that.
I use Newshosting which is 14.95/month with 70 days retention. You could go with Giganews, but who really needs 120 retention? I never have.

As for finding all the things you want, you'll find 95% of it. Even if you don't, you always have bittorrent sites as a second resource.

Newsgroups is great for me for all the little perks. Example: I work evenings, so I need to download a lot of the TV shows I like to watch. With bittorrent, I was always downloading those shitty "HDTV" versions of shows. Who gives a shit if it's HDTV if it's only 400x300? By the time I enlarge it, the quality sucks. I never wanted to download the 720i/p versions or the x264 versions, as an hour long TV show is like 2.4GB or something. With newsgroups, I download those shows in 720 or x264 in like 20 minutes and never have to care about seeding.

    Good advice Mr Skizo.

I'll be honest though, still use BT for my music, usually procured in album format from a pig based web site... that's it mostly though.

That little piggy is a good thing to have in your repertoire, indeed.

I find that Soulseek still works great for music as well, and again, no ratio bs.

I find that they compliment each other. Newsgroups, Soulseek, and finally bittorrent to bring up the rear.

Alright, I just fired up newsleecher again. You made a good point about the tv shows. One last annoying question though, is it any good for documentaries like the stuff released by the MVGroup? I'm kind of a huge nerd.

My isp offers a somewhat crappy news server, so I might as well gives newsgroups another shot.

Ooh, and for anything you can't find there, shareminer.com and ljseek, and works wonders.
