As the title says am i missing out on much, because i understand the search sites such as newzleech only index the most popular groups. I'm pretty new at newsgroups so i'm not entirely sure on whats on offer. The reason i ask is because sometimes i search on newzleech for a particular file and its not there so i get a torrent instead, and in the torrent theres a .txt or .nfo saying where it originated from and it was from a newsgroup
And you know what? Macs are too hip. "Oh, look at me! I do graphic design! I wear women's jeans and hang out in coffee shops! I'm a DJ!" Well good for you. My computer is not a fashion statement. It's a computer.

not intireley but most probably yes.
like you say your pretty new at newsgroups and it something that takes time to master.
i'm not entirely sure on whats on offer.
pretty much everything depending on your news servers retention some have 45 days others in the hundreds, this may also by why your searches draw a blank,so if your paying for a premium news server it helps if they have a good retention period. (but if your quick of the mark and get your downloads early this is not so necessary).

Yeah i'm with a premium provider, retention is ~99 days. I suspected i'd be missing a fair bit but i'm not really sure where to find out about what else is available

i'm not really sure where to find out about what else is available
then your have to go hunting

I dont know what newsreader your using but programs like grabit or newsleecher can download the headers for you, there are guides in this section that explain this.
this is a little bit more complex than just using NZBs and is probably the next step in learning more about newsgroups you need to take.

Some posters purposely miss name files, they try to get you to join a forum to see the name. Others just miss name them by accident.

Try browsing a binary group on a topic you're interested in to see everything it has to offer. It's more time consuming but often you find gems that wouldn't have some up in a regular search.

If you're looking for something old & rare I wouldn't bother with usenet unless you're willing to wait or get involved in a usenet community where you could make a request.

What I often do is search or browse www.newzbin.com for the latest releases. Then I use a free search engine like Binsearch.info to find the file and get an NZB.

Newzbin is an excellent subscription NZB index service that allows free browsing (but not downloading) of NZBs. Well worth joining if you download a lot from Usenet. They offer half-price subscriptions every December, and a lot of people buy a years worth of membership every December.

I think we here keep very well up to date with the latest releases at FST in our NZB Section. Only thing missing is porn, but really does Usenet need any more porn? It's easy enough to find without using nzb's. Hell, I have to filter out porn just to see releases properly.

[Back on topic] Newzbin.com is acceptable if you want to pay for your nzb's or if you feel like wasting your time by grabbing the title name from newzbin.com and using a free search engine to find the headers. When all of that time and money could have been saved by only checking out what was posted here and grabbing the nzb (which pretty much always have the correct files). Saved time and money seems like a great deal to me. I really can't understand why people would go through the trouble of using a free search engine and repeatedly searching out a title's release name until the search engine had it available when all along the nzb was here, free for the taking. I don't want to sound like I am preaching/etc, but FST has a wonderful user database and helpful moderators/etc. It seems logical to keep everything in one place: NZB's, discussions, bit-torrent (...), etc.

Now, instead of wasting one's resources on searching for releases via other sites and free search engines, how about putting that energy to use here? If only more people would help out, more wonderful postings from Usenet would available all the time, not just the latest scene releases etc. I know you won't miss out on any big release by watching and helping out our nzb section. I and other posters have uploaded the nzb's of very new movies, apps, tv series, etc before many bit-torrent site's uploaders add them to their site. Sometimes, I think the uploaders even grab them from usenet sometimes as their pre time (added 6 hour after pre [for example]) doesn't make sense especially seeing how the full release was uploaded to usenet over 8 hours ago. So, you can get the files at your maximum speed and even seed it back to whatever tracker you want if you have fast enough download speed.

To all, please check out our FREE NZB section. It's hard to post everything that is on Usenet with only our regular posters (I'm not just talking about the "NZB posters"); those others that help out know who they are. In this cause, please feel free to help by uploading nzb's yourself. It's very easy; read the posting guidelines so you post it correctly. I know that many of us can easily get tired of being the only ones posting, but with more help from other users, everything becomes much easier for all.

Any questions will surely be answered. Thanks for the support!

Cheers all, i appreciate the replies. I've just been browsing thru the grouplist via Newsleecher and i don't think theres much i'm missing that i couldn't source elsewhere easier ie torrents. At the moment i just use newsgroups for big popular files like movies and games because my slow upload speed makes it hard to seed torrents of those types 1:1. I will have a squiz at the nzb section here too, noticed it recently but am yet to check it out
    . Thanks again

I keep hearing that newsgroups have better pretimes on TV Shows, Movies, DVD-R's than Torrent sites. I have decided to give it a try just to see what is usenet about, but i cant really find anything with better pre than on privat trackers. I'v been checking more search engines, but its just not as fast as on p2p.. So i have kinda impression iam doing something wrong too

To make it simplier: Where you ppl get those rls's "with better pre's than p2p" ? Sites like binsearch or newzleecher isnt really answer imho..
