you can use shell open in the 2.4 version and use your own player for preview and skipp all that

Oh, I never realized that I forgot to mention that :">. I've always had those settings that way and guess I often forget the default settings that most people have...

Also, you can get to your temp internet files from IE -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Settings -> View Files. This might be simpler

And yeah, K-Lite 2.4x is close as you'll get to removing the theater. I doubt it will happen in 2.6 anytime soon.
