there are no rules against it. But maybe you should try making the background transparent instead, since that might work better on different skins.
Just load up photoshop or whatever you use, and see whether you can turn it into a .gif or possibly .png without messing up the shadow.

Really quick take. .gif (Herbert already made a .png, I noticed. .gif works better in some older browsers.)
