    IP address
    Username
    Password

I open my VNC and put in the appropriate info... and no connection.

do I need to use a port other than the standard 5901 or are there steps that im missing? Or is there an online control panel?

Remote Desktop Control is your friend, google to find a host of ways of using it, it is dead easy, RDC is the short name, just find the app that suits you best, the old MS RDC is what I use:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925876

You need to then install firefox & utorrent and it is a PC within a PC

And iirc - you need to enable some network options and off you go.

Which Linux distribution did you select for your server ?, It sounds like the xserver isn't configured correctly ? without the xorg server running the vncserver cannot run either, but a simple way to check is to start an ssh session and type in the command startx, if the command is not found then the xorg server has not been installed, it is just a basic commandline installation of the operating system.
