In Bittorrent (uTorrent) if I allow unlimited uploads it slows my download speed, however if I limit it to 50% of the maximum upload the download speeds up.
Noticeably like, not just a minor effect.

Sometimes the faster you're uploading the slower your overall download speed is.
Or does it slow down before it actually starts to upload quicker (at unlimited)?

Limit it to about 80% of you bandwith (upload)
If you max your up it will kill your down speed.
Mess around with the setting to experiment.
You want to up the most possible without slowing the down.
Then you will keep a good ratio and get stuff fast.

I limit my upload in azureus to 20KB to get maximum download speed when I'm downloading stuff, like, then leave it on unlimited to seed whatever i've downloaded.
