Thread: how many members does a tracker need?

  1. #21
It totally depends on content and users. You do not need 15000 users to have a good tracker at all. Specialty sites can get by on way less as long as the members are good and they offer content not available elsewhere.

You really need something to differentiate yourselves from every other tracker.

I would say about 15000 too. 5000-10000 is too low unless they are seeding just a couple of thousand torrents. Trackers with small user dtabes lack speed. Only the newest stuff gets seeded ok.

the member that said open up get 100,000 in and then in a year keep the best 10,000-15,000 has pretty much hit the nail on the head.

we had 100,000 members 2-3 months ago when we opened, 13,000 got disabled in just a few days for various reasons, we upped the prune accounts from 42 days to 60 days, just so we could keep 100,000 there for a little bit.

Now we have 72,000 members, which is still pretty good for a specialised tracker (we only do games) but thats 28,000 members we have lost in 3 months, and we still have 10,000 disabled users that have yet to be pruned.

We are totally closed now, with no invites either, so we will see where we are after xmas, but im betting it will be lower than 50,000 by then.

I would hazard a guess that we probably have about 15,000 regulars, thats ppl that login at least once a day. our IRC channel has about 80 users in there including the staff, and we get on average between 400 and 700 users online at any one time.

so its not hard to get the members in, what is hard is getting good members in that want to stop and take part in the community, not just come and leech a few torrents and never be seen again.

your tracker is very unique. i think that explains the high demand. i guess it's almost like having a monopoly.

thanks for your insights. quite interesting.
