its listed as an svcd but its extension is avi and it plays on avi preview so I dont know if it is one or not, is it?

yes but someone mentioned earlier svcd can have an avi extension

If you right click on it and go to file properties does it say mpeg or video clip. If it says video clip it is an avi.

It doesn't matter if it has a .avi extension it can still be VCD, SVCD or whatever, the movie must have been encoded to SVCD but kept .avi extension. It doesn't have to be .mpeg to be a SVCD!
