    what is the point of having a service pack and is service pack 3 the best?

    service packs are cumulative patches. point is the same as with applying patches one by one - increased security and/or stability.

    service pack 3 for what?

    just wondering whether service pack 3 is better than service pack 2?
    as i have jus recently moved from sp 1 to 2 and was wondering whether i shud upgrade to 3?

    yes, next year, when service pack 3 for xp is released, you should upgrade.

    in the meantime you can keep your system updated with latest patches through windows update.

    sorry for hijaking but guys i have a question to
    service pack is the windows firewall right ???

    no. when flaw or security breach is discovered by microsoft patches are issued as a remedy. they overwrite old system files with new patched ones.

    multiple patches are grouped together into service packs. so you have xp service packs, office service packs etc.

    ohh ok thanks optimus so its allwais the best to upgrade to the new one but of course SP3 is not yet released

    Thats why when you see a new version of a windows iso for D/L , say ETHO 's windows you look at the date . It may say Sept. 07 etc. it saves you D/L'ing of all the sp2 .

    Thats why if you format a lot you make a slipstreamed install disk to save time . If you do a clean install of Win 2000 Pro for example , it takes hours to upgrade to sp4 .
