Have you ever heard of a program called DU meter? It just basically keeps track of total upload and download traffic on the machine its running on, and you can use it to view daily/weekly/monthly useage, estimates of usage into the future based on the history of usage, ect. you can get a free trial version of it, but it only lasts so long. You gotta either buy the normal version then or look for a "special version" or a method to make it a "special version"

I purchased DUMeter way back in 2001, but even the latest version 4 isn't as feature-packed as BWMeter is. I now use BWMeter.

One problem with BWMeter, however, is that on my P4-D 2.8GHz, downloading at 2MB/sec (Mbytes, not Mbits) makes BWMeter use about 30% CPU. It gets the IP addresses from all packets so you can do custom graphs & statistics; presumably its code for that isn't particularly optimized.
