As j2 says it's more a case of having a wider range of words to choose from. Allowing for a greater range of nuance and connotation.
Let us say, for example, that I wish to refer (in whatever context) to the male/female reproductive act.
Let us also say that, for reasons of my own, I desire a word of a syllabic economy not afforded by such as "copulation".
