Thread: Kill The N00bs With What They Don't Understand

Gamefaqs.com has a system of Karma that is very good. If you put one in that was stricter, you'd be set. And I know the current board system doesn't allow for that, but I'd gladly donate my spare time (and I have quite a bit) to building this.
It could drastically change the system.
Check this out:
Little Timmy signs up for the KL forums.
He signs up as b1ggayhax0r.
Then he thinks "what trouble can I cause?"
Sadly, he has to WAIT 72 hours (3 days) if he used a freebie email account, and 24 hours if he used a paid account or one from an ISP.
Accounts from freebie email addies can only post 2 topics per day, and can only post 5 replies per day.
Accounts from paid email addies can only post 5 topics per day, and can only post 7 replies per day.
After the timeout periods, if the email addy was verified, the account has limited usage until 150 posts.
If it wasn't verified, the account is shut down and deleted from the db along with all posts/topics made.
If another signup is attempted, and the address still cannot be verified, the ip is banned, along with the name and other useful thingies.
Also, limited users cannot post as many replies on their own topics as on other peoples.
Until 50 posts, you're limited to a cap of 25 posts a week.
From 50 to 100 posts, you're limited to a cap of 50 posts a week.
From 100-150, you're limited to a cap of 75 posts a week.
From 150 and onwards, you're free as a bird.
And if you pay a one time fee of 10 bucks or whatever, you can of course have limits removed immediatly.

Tell me what you think. I'll start to design it immeditely if you want.

I dont like this idea, it goes too far.

First off, why punish people with hotmail/yahoo accounts?
How do you know they have these accounts for malicious purposes?
When is the limit to when this account can be verified?
How can you make someone wait 3 DAYS and then make them
verify immediately or they are gone?
Even with a paid email you have a restriction, why?
What would placing any restriction on # of posts anyway do?

Doing this would kill post whores and slow the whole board down.
I dont want the k-lite board to be a place where you have to pay
to fully enjoy. This whole system might detter users because
it give the whole "We're Watching You" feeling.
I havent seen that many people who go into this board to
cause trouble (at least not enough to take this sort of action)

Hey, I like the whole theory of "Big Brother." But also, anyone on the 'net from home has to have at least one account with an ISP. I think from personal experience that people really do use Hotmail/Yahoo accounts much more frequently for spam, since they are very easily accessable.
And for God's sake, don't take my suggestions as anything more than that. I doubt that if this system was put in place, it would be that strict. I just chose to use extreme situations as a way of explaining to what uses this system could be implemented for.

What if another person at home uses that account?
I've got an account from my Cable ISP but my whole family uses it.
So I definitely dont want anything personal going through there
and thats why i have a hotmail account.

And do you think I'm out here to start trouble?

(Dont say yes )

I never use my ISP's email - it's garbage.

I always use Hotmail/Yahoo - especially Yahoo - it's got good spam filters.

I'd rather pick up an old PC and pop Linux on it. Then you can setup a mail server mapped to your IP address, and if you want to virtual domains... It doesn't cost much at all.

Nope. I wouldn't support this at all. I don't give out my ISP email to forum boards. And restricting people's posting in that manner is just asinine.

things are quiet until hitler decides he'd like to invade russia
so, he does
the russians are like "OMG WTF D00DZ, STOP TKING"
and the germans are still like "omg ph34r n00bz"
the russians fall back, all the way to moscow
and then they all begin h4xing, which brings on the russian winter
the germans are like "wtf, h4x"

i'd third that

restricting people solely because they use a free email address is a little unfair

like the majority of people here i use a free email address on this forum
